Dry needling is a technique using very thin, sterile, single use needle inserted in to a muscle to assist with decreasing pain and improving function through the release of trigger poinst(knots in the muscles).
Dry needling is not the same as acupuncture although the 2 techniques presents some similarities. Dry needling is focused on the release of myofacial trigger points and acupuncture follows the meridiens according to Chinese medicine to restore the flow of energy called Qi.
Dry needling works by restoring the muscles’s ability to lenghten and shorten ‘s normally. When the needle is inserted into the trigger point it helps the vessels to bring more blood flow so more oxygen and nutrients to assist the healing process.
Dry needling can be used by your physiotherapist in conjunction to massage, manual therapy and exercise prescribtion.
