Parkinson’s disease can shrink movement over time — steps get smaller, posture stiffens, and everyday tasks demand more concentration. The good news is that the right kind of exercise can push back against this, and there’s a growing evidence base to prove it.
Our Parkinson’s program is based on the principles of PD Warrior, the exercise approach developed by neurological physiotherapist Dr Melissa McConaghy. PD Warrior-style training centres on three ideas: high-amplitude “big” movement to counteract the small, shuffling patterns common in Parkinson’s; agility and balance work to sharpen reaction time and reduce fall risk; and dual-tasking — combining a physical exercise with a mental challenge — to train the brain and body to work together under pressure, the way real life demands.
A 2024 pilot study of the PD Warrior program (Tucak et al., Internal Medicine Journal) followed people with early Parkinson’s disease through a 10-week course of weekly supervised classes plus a daily home program. Participants showed measurable improvements in motor function, balance, mobility, and quality of life. While it’s still early-stage evidence and larger trials are needed, the results support what many clinicians have observed: targeted, high-intensity, brain-engaging exercise can make a real difference in how people with Parkinson’s move and function day to day.
What this means for you
At Active Life Physio, we’ve built our Parkinson’s exercise program around these same principles. You’ll work through big-amplitude movement drills, agility and balance challenges, and dual-tasking exercises — all tailored to your stage of Parkinson’s and your goals, and progressed under close supervision.
Please note: our program is inspired by and based on the PD Warrior approach — we are not a licensed PD Warrior provider.
Take the next step
Parkinson’s doesn’t have to mean smaller movement or a smaller life. With the right program, you can train your brain and body to stay strong, agile, and confident.
